Energizing Urban Ecosystems (EUE)

The EUE program will create an internationally recognized and multidisciplinary hub of excellence for urban development in Finland. It will offer a globally networked cooperation platform for various R&D projects of urban planning and development.

Aalto University is going to establish the Aalto Urban Lab in Otaniemi, Espoo as the core of excellence where public and private sector actors and research institutes may engage in cooperation that supports creative, interactive and continuous learning. In content-driven facilities city planners and zoners, among others, can together with top experts of various fields develop visions and solutions for future cities.

The budget of the EUE program to be implemented in 2012-2015 is about e20 million. The program seeks to find operational models and solutions to the challenges posed by urbanization. The goal is to create user-centric and competitive urban solution concepts applicable to both existing and new areas. Solutions to innovation activity, energy use and mobility will be integrated with the design of the built environment, land use and the ecosystems of service production.

The concepts to be developed in the EUE program will be modeled, simulated and tested e.g. in the Espoo T3 area (Tapiola-Otaniemi-Keilaniemi). Their development will occur in conjunction with the development of the Östersundom area of Helsinki, and they will be tested in urban development projects implemented in China. R&D will also be done on water supply and sewerage solutions and improvement of international competitiveness of water technology.

The driver organizations of the work packages of the EUE program will be DigiEcoCity Ltd, Kemira Oyj, SRV Group Plc and the City of Espoo.
